AUSTIN - JazzyNe' here! Now a lot of you saw the headline and are wondering why we're talking about Momokun? Well it's mostly because she's 1) representative of the issues that continue to plague the geek community and 2) she should've been cancelled a long time ago but is only feeling any burn now because she's sexually assaulted other female cosplayers.
Here's a quick run down - Sometime during the 4th of July week, people began sharing stories about their interactions with Mariah Mallad aka Momokun Cosplay. And with the power of the innanets news spread like wildfire that she had been sexually harassing and assaulting female cosplayers. Momokun then blamed her actions on being bullied, fat-shamed, and because she has ADHD *cue REALLY hard side eye*. After about 2 days she issued out an apology hoping to save her now tarnished image and career.
*See the screenshots below of the evidence of Mariah's shenanigans.*
Now my question is WHY did it take these brave women coming out and telling the world what this chick has done in order for us to go, "Hey Momokun is a terrible person and doesn't deserve any of the attention or fame she's garnered over the years!" Like there's probably mile's long proof of her showing her tail and it's really sad. She has utilized racial slurs and many have shared stories of their not-so-pleasant interactions with the cosplayer at various conventions that she's been to. Why is she even still a thing? WHY? Because there are men she panders to, who worship the ground she walks on, and she's considered a member of the plus-sized community and thus feels she has a safety net to do whatever she wants... that's not how this should work but it is. Now little Ms. Cosplay Carol is finally feeling the burn...
She should've fried months ago! The things we all know to be problematic shouldn't be made an exemption within the geek community. People like her give cosplayers a really bad rep and it's bad enough that others already think we're weird for simply living our lives and reveling in our hobbies. What we shouldn't stand for is the continued abuse of our community members. I've said this once and I'll keep saying it - the geek community is NOT exempt from experiencing racism, abuse, etc. It is not. We are not some super private club that is "above" society and Momokun is a prime example of how NOT to act at all. So what she's a thick girl. And? Does that mean it's okay for her to act like a complete ass and disrespect other women and men? No. Momokun isn't just a mean girl. Momokun is a brat - yeah I said it. She's a brat who thinks that some mediocre apology will help salvage any damage she's already done. Honey when the snowball starts rolling ain't no stopping it all!
The moment she posted the ever-forbidden N-word on Twitter? She should've been cancelled. When she decided to expose Kay Bear, Nana Bear, and countless others in front of attendees? She should've been cancelled. When people were telling stories of how rude and stuck up she was acting at conventions? People should've started looking at her sideways. But no. Sadly this type of abusive behavior is tolerated. It is NOT okay to treat people that way and if you think so then don't be surprised at the consequences. Momokun has no power to do anything to anybody and she sees that now. Money and fame don't make you untouchable! It just may make you richer, but you'll still be who you are at the end of the day. Don't be a Momokun. Here are some 'receipts' for you to consider:
